The Scandal of Calling God “Father”

Calling God

Most people would regard God Almighty as The Creator, The LORD of Heaven’s Armies, The King of Righteousness, The Alpha and The Omega.  Rightly so, because He is all of those and more, but our relationship and revelation of God should not end with those formal titles because Jesus Christ personally came down to earth to reveal to us our true connection to God.

I am writing this because there are a good number of Christian believers who are bombarded with needless guilt from their urge to call God “Father” or “Papa”.  There is always this argument (and fear) from new believers that it is irreverent to call God your “Father”.  The audacity of calling Him “Daddy” is self-elevating as it is disrespectful.

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,
-Galatians 3:26

Let us not forget, that one of the many things Jesus Christ has done on the cross is to pay for the penalties of our sins so that we can renew our relationship with God (through the New Covenant).  That before we were sinners, we were regarded as SLAVES of sin; moreover, we were considered ENEMIES of God.  But through the cross of Jesus Christ, we were elevated from mere slaves to that of a CHILD of the house.

Abba Father

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
-Romans 8:15

The urge to call Him “Papa” comes from the Holy Spirit while the guilt that ruins that relationship comes from the false teachings of religion.  I cannot see how some Christians mislead other believers by saying that it is disrespectful to call God “Father” when Jesus Christ Himself taught us to call Him “Father” (Matthew 6:9).  Be careful about people who make their own rules apart from God’s word.

Calling The LORD GOD Abba or Daddy God is a show of respect, it makes nothing of us and makes everything of Him; moreover it is a show of intimacy as that of a father and son. It is also a testament and an exaltation of what Jesus Christ has done for us because only the cross of Jesus Christ can qualify us to call God “Daddy” or “Papa”!

To call Him Father is to stand in confidence that Jesus Christ has washed you perfectly clean with His shed blood and you believe that Jesus Christ has resurrected.

Jesus Cross Washed Us

We have to reject this religious attitude of formalities and being proper that will only drive us further away from God.  God is reaching out to us and yet there are some people out there who don’t like this truth (because it lowers their importance) and they will use crazy religion to create that distance between you and God.  The best attitude here is to go back to the word and double check on what Jesus Christ has said and what Jesus Christ has done.  It can be clearly seen that we were once sinners and outcasts; but because of Jesus Christ and His cross, we have become children of the most high God.

We have every right to call God “papa”.  It is not a sin nor is it a sign of irreverence at all.  This longing to cry out: “Abba, Father!” is from the Holy Spirit within us.  It is the evidence that the Holy Spirit is operating in you and it is the very evidence that Jesus Christ has conquered our sins through the cross.

Let go of all the doubts and fears.  Go and claim your sonship and in faith cry out: Abba! Father!

Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”
-Galatians 4:6
