Temple of The Holy Spirit

All-about-Jesus-christ1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”

Sometimes, to understand the Bible more, I re-read the verse backwards.  In this case, this is how I would see the verse:  in order for us to honor God with our bodies we should first have 2 basic revelations.

One, we should first realize that our bodies are not actually our own.  We lost our rights to it when we rejected God and sinned.  Having sinned against The Holy One, we deserve nothing but death, a thousand times over.  But because of Jesus Christ, who paid for all our sins on the cross, we were given the undeserved favor of having to have lived again; this time, as God’s children.  So this body that is housing us right now doesn’t belong to us, it doesn’t belong to the world, no it doesn’t belong to your spouse nor does it belong to the devil.  It belongs to the One who purchased it – The blood of Jesus Christ.

Two, having had the revelation that our bodies are the creation and righteous properties of The Lord; it is His decision to make it His house.  As Paul would put it, our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.  The Lord doesn’t stay in any physical structure or in any idols or statues. He lives within all of us and He lives in everyone who belongs to His flock.

Knowing the true spiritual state of our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit will empower us to pay more respect to it.  This body of ours, we received out of God’s grace and it is this revelation of grace that makes us honor and love Him more.
