Treasure Map to God

Where-Is-God

Most people keep asking the same question: “where is God?”

A song by U2 entitled: “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, speaks of man’s search for the Almighty. The song talks about man’s genuine efforts in search for God:

I have climbed the highest mountains,

I have run through the fields, only to be with you

I have run, I have crawled, I have scaled these city walls

Only to be with You

Only to be disappointed in the end singing:

“But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.”

This song echoes the sentiments of a lot of people’s hearts. They have circled the world looking for God; they have sacrificed and have done ‘good’, they have prayed and begged God to come to them, the song even mentioned about speaking in ‘tongues of angels’ only to discover that there is no satisfaction there. Then the song echoes back what most genuine and misguided people feel: I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.

Does God really hide Himself from people?  Is He Someone fond of games such as hide and seek?  I hate the lyrics of this song because it portrays our loving Father as Someone who is reluctant to reveal Himself to His beloved children.  After all, it’s in the words of His Beloved Son Who said:

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

-Matthew 7:7

I won’t be surprised if the person in the U2 song doesn’t find God; because the person in the song is looking for God at the wrong places; he was searching for God through his efforts and self-righteousness.  In this sense, what I mean by self-righteousness is the thinking that: “I’m a good person, God should appear to me. (I deserve to see God)”

I say this once again that if God were to appear to us based on the standards of His law, He would be looking down on all of us in hell.  Let no one see themselves as ‘holy’ or even ‘good’ by their own standards.

God is nowhere to be found in the flesh.  So if you try to make God ‘appear’ by doing charity and other puny attempts to impress Him, then you’ll be in for a whole life of disappointment.

Now why is this? God sits at His heavenly throne and He will not dwell in our sinful flesh.  So if you think that our fleshly works of charity and our chest-beating prayers can earn us holy points to deserve God’s presence, think again.  Our flesh and its works are too fallen for the standards of The Holiest of the Holiest Being making Paul say:

No flesh should glory in His presence.  -1 Corinthians 1:29

So where do we find God?

Who better to answer this question than Jesus Himself?  Jesus Christ is The only way to the Father and this way that He made cost Him His life.  Do you actually think He will leave us in this fallen world without any guide as to where we can find Him?

The biggest clue is found on the book of John chapter 1 verse 1:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Most people would have gotten it by now.  The person in the U2 song cannot find God because he was looking for Him at the wrong place!  He looked in a lot of places but what he did not mention, which is the most important thing, is looking into God’s word! The Holy Bible.  No wonder he cannot find God! Jesus Christ is in The Word; in fact, Jesus Christ IS God’s word!

Finding Jesus in The Word is so important that even when Jesus was personally walking with His disciples at the road to Emmaus (Luke 24), the risen Christ still revealed Himself to His disciples through the scriptures!

And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

-Luke 24:27

Even when He was alive on earth, Jesus told people about finding HIM in the Old Testament scriptures:

For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.

-John 5:46

You see, the Lord has always been in His word but we are too busy looking for Him in the world.  That’s why we cannot find Him.  Like His beloved disciples, our Lord Jesus wants us to find Him in the word!

The whole Bible speaks of Jesus Christ and it is the only place in the world where we can actually find Him! Seek and you shall find. Read your Bibles, He is there waiting to reveal Himself and His love to you.  Read about Him, see Him in every page of the Bible until your heart is filled with His love and you thirst for this world no more.

And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

-Luke 24:32
