On Truthful Lips and Lying Tongues

Liars

Truthful lips endure forever,

but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

-Proverbs 12:19

The tongue is one of the smallest organs of our body which holds tremendous spiritual powers (James 3:3-5).  It can be used to declare good news (Romans 10:15) and it is capable of stirring up tremendous evil as what the apostle James said:

the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. –James 3:6

The Lying Tongue

Demons and evil forces will make you believe that God is evil.  That is why the devil is called The Father of Lies (John 8:44).  He appears as a roaring lion, a fake and angry form of our Lord Jesus Christ.  It is the devil’s goal to distance us from Jesus’ righteousness by creating these lies that God caused all the pain in the world: the tsunamis, the earthquakes, diseases, afflictions, and all suffering.

It is not difficult to single out such spirits, the apostle John wrote about them: “Who is The Liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ.” (1 John 2:22)

So when you meet such people who talk trash about God or deny Jesus Christ, always remember that you are dealing with an evil spirit, a liar; and it is there for one purpose: to make you think and speak like they do.

Well, thank God for the proverb above because the devil, besides his lying tongue, has no more power over us.  Next, I will show you the good news about our tongues.  Yes, it is capable of so much evil but here you will see its God given purpose: To speak the truth.

Truthful Lips give birth to champions

Simon Peter, like you and me, committed a lot of blunders during his time with Christ.  He responded to his pride and anger when he sliced Malchus’ ear off, he slept in the garden where he should be praying and keeping guard, and the worse of all, is that good ol’ Pete is famous for his 3-fold denial of knowing Jesus Christ.  With all due respect to Peter, I won’t be putting down the verses of his so-called blunders.  Let’s give the guy a break, we are not here to count sins.  I’m merely showing everyone that Peter was as normal and ordinary as each one of us.

The operative word here is ‘was’; because throughout Peter’s story in the Gospels, The Lord Jesus is going to lift Peter up as a champion.  Among all the crazy stuff Peter did and all the crazy stuff he said, Peter did some things right.  One of these is when he used his lips to speak the truth.  He hit the bull’s eye that surprised even The Lord Jesus when he pointed and declared:

“You are the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

-Matthew 16:16

With this, Jesus replied:

“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.  And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

-Matthew 16:17

Another champion who was pointed out by Jesus Himself to be the greatest among the prophets was a man known as John the Baptist. No, he is not the founder of the Baptist church but he did baptize people including The Son of God, Jesus Christ.

John the Baptist did not do any miracles but he was still deemed as the greatest (Luke 7:28).  I’m here to tell you that it’s not because he is Jesus’ cousin and it’s definitely not because he baptized The Christ.  Even John the Baptist himself knew he wasn’t worthy of anything when compared to Christ.

John became the greatest because, like Peter, he knew who Jesus was and he used his lips to literally point to The Truth:

Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

– John 1:29

Again, we are posed with a choice: to use our lips for spreading lies about God? Or to use our lips to point to the Truth?

Like the champions before us, let us approach Christ and declare to Him: “I know Who You are.  You are the Christ Who took away the sin of the world.  You are the Messiah.  The Son of The Living God!” Let’s use our God given tongues to speak the truth and receive all the miracles, all the promotions, all the blessings that Jesus Christ has died to give us!

Let us use our tongues to speak the truth and say:

“I know Who You are and you will not allow me to die of cancer.”

“I know Who You are and you will not allow me to be put to shame.”

“I know Who You are and you will never leave me nor forsake me.”

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

-Matthew 6:33
