The Principle of Sowing and Reaping in Christian Counselling

Hi everyone, thanks for visiting our page. Below are the additional notes for the video above. Please excuse the lack of flow or even coherence. I just placed my notes there as is. I didn’t want to edit and re-edit stuff less I procrastinate once again.

Christian Counselling is largely about correcting the mindset by letting new things SINK IN.

Correct thinking is good but it’s not enough for an over all change in your life. Our psychological defense mechanisms are so good in resisting change that we even deny what are ultimately great truths.

Do you really know what it means that your sins are forgiven?
Do we really know what it means that God loves us?

These truths are so overwhelmingly good that our fleshly minds reject them. I suspect it operates in the same mechanism as the Freudian denial.

Our job in counselling is to interface these truths with our hearts. To make truth weightier such that it sinks in to a more tangible and more permanent state.

Biblical References:

Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9

Sowing and Reaping is the principle that big things come from the accumulation of small things. I usually refer to this as making a million dollars by saving one dollar at a time.

Illustrations and Citations:

  • The Lord Jesus talked about The Mustard Seed.
  • Parable of the sower in Matthew 13
  • I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.
    1 Corinthians 3:6

It is immature to think in “quick” terms (ie: get rich quick schemes or dreams of overnight success).
I go to the gym today and i expect to bulk up muscles by tomorrow.
I fast today so I should lose weight by tomorrow.

Forming life changing Habits

Lives truly transform because of the big (seemingly drastic) changes that come from the accumulation of small changes.

We start from small thoughts, from meditating on daily verses, 5 minutes at a time to journaling about them. Sow now and you will reap the harvest in due time.

No one blessed by The Lord magically appeared like Mary Sue in a poorly written story. Everyone had to go through the dessert experience, the trials by fire:

Joseph until he is ready to rule in Egypt
David until he’s ready to be king
Peter until he was ready to preach
Paul until he was ready to build a church

Even The Lord Jesus Christ had to be a carpenter first. Think about that. No cheapskate shortcutter would ever conquer the temptation hurled at Christ. To be starving for 40 days and be tempted by The Devil itself. Being The Man that He is and The Lord which He will always be, Jesus Christ conquered every trial, every suffering like a boss. The Lord Jesus Christ did not obtain all these success and accomplishments in a silver platter:

When He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.

He was tempted in all sides. Yet without sin.

Yes, He is The Son of God, yet He still has to go through the process of sowing and reaping.

For Reflection:

What are the things I am good at? How long have I been “training” for this?
What do I want to improve in my life? What little things can I change in my daily routine to sow on this?
